    Default Posting A New Idea 101: The Things You Really Have to Know

    Ok, I have noticed that most ideas that are brought up are ideas that are meant only to benefit one type of player. Soo, I've come up with a solution that may help a couple of people that have ideas, so that when they put up an idea it doesn't get flamed.

    1) Make it semi-generic: Don't make it specific to one situation or one type of player. If it only would benefit defenders, sim cities, or small alliances, it is not a good idea. Make sure that it wouldn't create an imbalance in the game, or else you will lose a portion of the strategies that make this game fun.

    Moderator's note: Unless you can see it keeping the game balanced and fair, do not suggest ideas meant to benefit your own account. Attempt to see an idea from the perspective of all players before posting it. - conquerer7

    2) Check to see if it already exists: A lot of new ideas are already implemented as a plus feature, or exist for all players but are not obvious (such as the address book function). This will just make you seem like you didn't do your research, and will make your idea null and void.

    3) Don't ask for plus features to be free: This will only get your thread locked after it has been flamed by people who are faster than the mods. Travian has to make money, so trying to get it to give away what brings in the dough just doesn't work. People ask for it to happen to every plus and gold feature, and it has never worked.

    4) Don't repeat someone else's idea: If someone has already suggested the idea, then don't suggest it again. Please, it's annoying, and it doesn't make you seem smart. Use the search function to see if it already exists, you'll thank yourself later.

    5) Make it nice: People don't want to read a wall of text, EVER. Make sure the idea gets straight to the point in the first sentence, and then adds details. Make sure that every aspect of the idea is also clear, as to make it less confusing. Certain details may make an idea go from making sense to being completely unrealistic. Also, use paragraphing and punctuation to make it easier to read.

    Moderator's note: Also, make sure that you DO add details. Saying something like "We should have archers!" and not elaborating will just got your thread deleted, and might even lead to you being warned/banned. -Woden

    6) Don't make the game more complex: Honestly, the gameplay is fine as it is. We don't need to have players on at all times to make sure that the druiders attack first, or anything like that. People have to LEARN this game, so please don't try to make it harder to do so. It really doesn't matter if it happened in real life, it just doesn't work for the game.

    7) NO CUTSCENES: Although it would be interesting the first time it occured, having a cutscene for common occurences (such as seeing the battles, or finding new villages) would just become annoying after a very short time. Also, it doesn't change anything at all, it just makes things a little more confusing, and makes it take longer to load.

    Moderator's note: This also applies to a lot of graphical things. Troops moving on the map, animated battles, cutscenes, all of them would greatly increase loading times for a purely cosmetic change. Not to mention that they tend to become tiresome quite quickly. - Woden

    8) Think of the programmers: These guys make everything happen. If it is difficult for them, or is just a waste of their time, then don't suggest it. Maintenance is the hardest part of making a program, and adding more stuff to the game just gives more to maintain. Try to think of what you would say if you wer a programmer. Would you want more work just for something simple that people don't care to take 5 seconds to do?

    9) Be kind when presenting: Don't introduce your idea like its hate mail. Be polite when presenting, as if you were presenting a new product to a company, because that's exactly what you are doing. You are presenting an idea to be added to their product. Keep it nice and somewhat professional.

    10) No Tribe Specific items: Don't try to bring in new troop types, or new buildings. Also, please don't try to give certain buildings more powers than they already have. We don't need more traps for the trapper, nor do we need the Roman walls to have anti-ram capabilities. It just makes the game imbalanced.

    12) Do NOT preface your idea with a long-winded story: Seriously, no-one wants to read several paragraphs of non-relevant storyline to find out what you are suggesting. Put the meat of your idea first, and then post the story if you really feel the need to. - Woden


    13) Taboo ideas: There are a few things that the game developers absolutely refuse to add, mostly because a) other similar games have them, and they want to keep Travian unique from them, or b) because people keep spamming poorly thought-out versions of the idea (*cough* archers *cough*). Here's a brief list of the ones I know of:
    • Archers
    • New tribes
    • New units for existing tribes
    • Oceans / lakes / naval combat

    This is just some things you should think of before introducing an idea. I am sure that it will
    help many a person come up with better ideas, and maybe limit the number of bad ideas out there. I hope it made sense!

    One last note: Try to keep it to one basic idea per thread. If you put a lot of ideas into a single thread, then it tends to get a bit confusing as people start talking over each other about specific ideas. - Woden

    One last-last note: Be sure to include a concrete reason why your idea would improve the game. Ideas that attempt to 'freshen up' the game by implementing new races or changing the setting entirely (e.g. "Travian in space!") typically don't fare well. Think of ideas as add-ons, not expansion packs. -conquerer7

    I also recommend making a few good, positive points and a nice opening statement. Don't forget to make your thread look neat, organized, well presented. With proper grammar, spelling, even in paragraph setup.

    Anyways, it's already a plus feature, for future reference.

    Default Note on Reputation ideas

    A note on any ideas dealing with Reputation:

    vBulletin has a very limited number of options pertaining to Reputation. This is, quite literally, the entirety of the options regarding Reputation:
    • Enable/disable reputation on the site.
    • Interval for rep-power from reputation.
    • Interval for rep-power from time registered.
    • Enable/disable reputation for specific users (must be set on a case-by-case basis).
    • Rep messages (e.g., "x is on a distinguished path.").
    • Rep requirements in promotions (e.g., Farmhand --> Villager)
    That's it. Anything not in that list can't be changed without modifications, which Travian's Head Office doesn't want us using. We can't even change the pip settings (other than the appearance) without a modification.


    If you have an idea regarding Reputation that is NOT listed here, then there isn't even a point in posting it since there is nothing we can do about it.

    Default Another note on presenting an idea

    When thinking about ways to change Travian, DON'T start with a "cool name" and work from there; this invariably leads to crappy ideas that get shot down. Instead, start with a game mechanic you think would be good or that could be improved, and work from there.

    Addendum: To clarify, this means the name should be part of the idea, not vice versa. For example, thinking that kings would be cool in the game, and changing your idea many times so they would have a purpose to fill would be a bad idea. It helps to take a step back and view everything as cold hard numbers for a second. -C7

    Default Regarding forum changes:

    For any ideas that involve forum changes:

    Unless it's an option already available in VBulletin, and Fighter/Tar come across it as they're perusing through admincp, we can not add it.

    All threads that suggest new forum features will have to have directions on how to find the feature in the vbulletin manual. This will make it much easier to assess the feature, and implement it if it's a useful one.

    We are not allowed to install any add-ons, so we are limited to standard VBulletin forums. If you can not find the feature you are looking in the manual, then please suggest the addition of this feature through the vbulletin site.
