The company I worked for prior to my retirement for reasons of longterm disability was a public opinion polling firm that also did pro bono et pro publica straight-up sociological research. (Yes, corporations do pro bono et pro publica work.) (At least in most countries.)
One of our academic research projects was collaboration with a consortium of other Eiropean polling companies to conduct surveys of social values in about 40 countries around the world, from all continents, and from both developed and developing nations - and to track these over tine. The database goes back to the late 70s.
Some of the social values tracked include things like importance of religion, gender roles flexibility, equality between men and women, traditional views of the family, acceptance of authority. These are part of a cluster of values that tend to shift together.
Back in the 70s, most developed countries were fairly close on many of the values in this cluster, and were often not far from the values found in developing nations in africa, asia, south america and the middle east.
Since then, these values have shifted dramatically - less importance of religion, more support for flexible gender roles, gender equality, and non-traditional families, less acceptance of authority - in all developed nations except the US, whose predominant social values in these areas continue to resemble those of less developed nations.
In short, no I don't miss the comparison between the US and South America or the Middle East. I see it. And I see it in sociological data. Yes, there are regional differences, the west coast and the northeast are more like Europe and canada than other oarts of the US on these issues - but other parts of the country are not changing at all.
And now I'll tell you what's against us, an art that's lived for centuries. Go through the years and you will find what's blackened all of history. Against us is the law with its immensity of strength and power - against us is the law! Police know how to make a man a guilty or an innocent. Against us is the power of police! The shameless lies that men have told will ever more be paid in gold - against us is the power of the gold! Against us is racial hatred and the simple fact that we are poor.
- The Ballad of Sacco and Vanzetti, Joan Baez
Sap, you speak as if you are different to other stupidly religious countries. You can't elect a leader that doesn't pledge allegiance to your embedded religion. You actually let that religion heavily influence your laws. Yes you are more violent than most. Does it relate? Dunno, but you sure as hell cant throw stones from inside that very glassy house.
I'm glad I'm not judgemental like all you smug, superficial idiots
