It's like choosing a wife or husband, the single most important decision of your travian life. Having said that there are as many important factors as there are in choosing a spouse.
Find an alliance that has lots of people that will treat each other as equals.
Find an alliance that is full of smart players near the top of their game.
Find an alliance that doesn't see you as just more cannon fodder.
Find an alliance for which you have something to contribute.
Alternatively find a major player you admire and join that players personal shield/support alliance. It's easier and they will give you guidence and instruction. A benevolent overlord can be a very good thing.
