There are many posts (at least two a day) regards the difference between raid and normal attack. Most of these are by new players who aren't aware of the FAQ.
So here's a thread on the subject...
Normal Attack
This is a type of attack built for destruction. It is usually used in the process of village destruction, or at least total slaughter of the opposing player.
During an attack, one side will be completely destroyed. Battering rams, catapults and administrators only work under this type of attack. Also, using an attack rather than a raid can free trapped troops from a Gaul.
Because of the damage that can be caused, normal attack can not be sent by sitters.
Raid Attack
This is more of a run-and-grab tactic. It's done usually to get resources, but also to kill enemy troops. Normally, neither side will lose all of their troops... the percentage casualties total to 100% over both sides. Rams and catapults don't work in this situation.
Scouts are NOT affected by the choice of attack - you get the same outcome either way.
